Early history of the village

The Parish of Grindale has been inhabited since the arrival of the first farmers from the Continent about 4000 B.C., although there is evidence that there were nomadic hunters in the area before this. No doubt the mere was a focal point of the early settlements. The quality of flint implements, flint axes, and other artefacts of this period found here are of a very high standard.
